There is a “big chance” of Manchester United signing Tottenham striker Harry Kane if former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino takes charge at Old Trafford, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Lowdown

The Red Devils have compiled a shortlist of candidates to succeed interim manager Ralf Rangnick, who is set to transition to a two-year consultancy role at the end of the season.

According to the Daily Mail, Paris Saint-Germain’s Pochettino and Ajax’s Erik ten Hag are among the leading contenders for the job.

If United are able to secure the former, this would see him return to the Premier League, having left Tottenham in November 2019 after 293 games in charge. This would be the Argentine’s third job in the English top flight, after the 49-year-old spent 17 months at Southampton before being snapped up by Spurs in 2014.

The Latest

Transfer insider Jones has claimed that Kane could end up joining Manchester United if his former Spurs boss is appointed at Old Trafford.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, the journalist stated: “The two had an unbelievable relationship. When Pochettino got the PSG job, Harry Kane was seen as a potential PSG player. There would be a big chance that Harry Kane ends up at Man United [if Pochettino is appointed].”

The Verdict

At 37 years of age and with his contract expiring in less than 18 months’ time, it would be unsurprising to learn that the Red Devils are looking at possible replacements for Cristiano Ronaldo, who has played as United’s centre-forward on 29 occasions this season.

Pochettino’s rumoured move to Manchester has thrown doubts over Kane’s future, which have heavily been discussed in the media over recent times, with Manchester United now thrown into the mix.

The striker’s record in the Premier League is all the information needed to determine whether he would be a good addition to Rangnick’s squad. Antonio Conte’s star striker has played 267 games in the English top flight, having amassed a sensational 173 goals in that time. Therefore, it is clear to see why his current boss values him so strongly, having labelled him a “world-class striker”.

With a current market valuation of £90m, it begs the question as to how much it would cost United to sign Kane, and further raises the question as to whether that fee will be worth it. However, going off his scoring record alone, the 28-year-old would massively improve United, and selling him to a top-four rival would compound the misery of losing him for Tottenham fans.
